Periods can get painful sometimes. Taking care on those 5-7 days is extremely important and it is necessary to take steps to prevent the pain from increasing. Here are some exercises that might help to reduce the pain!
EXERCISES TO HELP THROUGH HEAVY PERIOD FLOW
WALKING
To begin with, walking for 30-45 minutes outdoors helps to freshen up minds and results in less period flow helping in reducing abdominal pain. Walking helps one to divert her mind, get some fresh air which helps her calm down and reduces pain.
YOGA
Yoga has been a part of Indian culture for years. Yoga can be a broad term. Practicing certain yoga poses really helps to reduce period pain.
Here are some poses that should be practiced during periods :
Cobra Pose or Bhujangasaan – This includes laying down flat on your stomach and stretching your upper body keeping your hips touched to the floor. Holding this pose for 30-60 seconds is recommended but if one cannot hold for that long it is advisable to hold it for how many ever seconds possible.
Cat – Camel Stretch – This includes taking support of your hands and knees by placing them on the ground and pushing your stomach in and out and controlling your breath. It includes flexing and relaxing the abdominal area.
Spinal Twist – It is done by lying on the back, crossing one leg over the other and supporting it with the opposite hand. This helps in releasing the pain and relaxing the muscles of the lower back region. Holding this pose for 45-60 seconds is advisable. Make sure it is done on both the sides.
PILATES
This has been one of the most trending exercise now a days. It includes training a specific group of muscles and helps in muscle co-ordination. It targets specific muscle groups and one can alter the set as per convenience. It helps to relax the body muscles and the work out helps to calm the mind and keep it healthy.
Pilate workouts have become quite popular on YouTube too. Some of the famous pilate instructors are Move With Nicole, Cassey Ho, Pilates with Jenn Allen, etc.
SWIMMING AND DANCING
Most of the girls believe swimming on their periods may lead to more stomach cramps and bleeding but it isn’t true. Swimming is one of those exercises that makes you feel calm and helps you to relax and cool off.
Dancing is a passion for many people. It makes them feel relaxed and less stressed and helps their abdominal muscles to calm which thus causes less cramps.
This might not be suitable for some girls and if it causes excessive bleeding and cramps is advisable not to continue.
Here are some exercises one should avoid
Any strenuous exercise which may lead to increased back pain and cramps
Lifting heavy weights during periods which adds strain on the lower back
Yoga poses if not done correctly may lead to muscle pulls and injuries
Make it a point to do an exercise correctly with a proper posture or else it may cause serious injuries and spasms.
It is also important to understand how your body works. Different bodies react differently to the same amount of exercise. It is important to listen to your own body and stop exercising when you feel your body cannot take it. One should keep in mind that she should not train excessively and stress out her body.
